Big Screen Symposium

Novelist and screenwriter Jonathan Raymond presents a masterclass and an In Conversation session with Emily Perkins at this year’s Big Screen Symposium.

In his master class, Jonathan Raymond will discuss his collaboration with director Kelly Reichardt (OLD JOY, WENDY AND LUCY, MEEK’S CUTOFF and NIGHT MOVES), with special attention to issues of chance, failure, and regional imagination. We all know there are excellent stories in our own backyards. The lives of our families and neighbours are rife with tales of betrayal, secrecy, and strange acts of rebellion. How do you dig them up? How do you shape them into something compelling to the rest of the world? Also, how do you live through the soul-damaging experience of real failure?

Jonathan Raymond is a Portland-based novelist and screenwriter. He is the author of the novels THE HALF-LIFE, RAIN DRAGON and fourth-coming FREEBIRD. Jon co-writes with director Kelly Reichardt, having penned OLD JOY (2006), WENDY AND LUCY (2008), MEEK’S CUT-OFF (2010), and NIGHT MOVES (2013). Recently he co-wrote HBO’s 5 x Emmy award winning miniseries MILDRED PIERCE with revered indie director Todd Haynes. Jonathan’s full bio here.
