KEYNOTE WANURI KAHIU

Wanuri Kahiu argues that we have framed our lives in fear: it has become much more comfortable and acceptable to communicate trepidation than joy. What if our art, our stories, our voices were more about celebrating joy than overcoming suffering?

Wanuri is the co-founder of media company AFROBUBBLEGUM which suggests a different lens to see the world. One that adds to our language of joy by curating fun, fierce and frivolous art by people of colour to change the common narrative from despair and desire to one of exuberance and wealth.

Using historical, present-day and futuristic examples of joy traditions and cultures expressed through African art, Wanuri explores a new zeitgeist – one of joy and of hope.
