Sue May

Sue May is a publicist specialising in film, working as both unit publicist and release publicist. Her most recent project was the release of UTU REDUX in the NZ International Film Festival.

She managed the publicity for MT ZION from unit publicity during the shoot to Sony Pictures’ NZ cinema and DVD releases and assisted with the Australian cinema release. She had a similar level of involvement with BILLY T: TE MOVIE, transitioning from unit publicist to release publicity, also for Sony Pictures.

She manages publicity for all films released in NZ by 20th Century Fox, which currently includes STOKER and THE WOLVERINE and major past releases include LIFE OF PI, AVATAR, BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL, ICE AGE and BLACK SWAN.

She was unit publicist for MR PIP and HOME BY CHRISTMAS. Other New Zealand films include unit and release publicity for RIVER QUEEN (20th Century Fox) and THE TATTOOIST (Disney NZ), THE MAORI MERCHANT OF VENICE, SPOOKED and prepared publicity materials for RAIN OF THE CHILDREN and THE STRENGTH OF WATER.

Offshore productions include unit publicist for THE WARRIOR’S WAY, WITHOUT A PADDLE, BOOGEYMAN and VERTICAL LIMIT as well as NZ media liaison for XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS AND HERCULES, THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS.

She was the founder (with Graeme Cowley) of Onfilm magazine (1983) and initiated The Data Book (1988). The idea for Onfilm magazine grew out of her committee work for the Academy of Motion Pictures, the forerunner of today’s industry organisations. At the time she had been working as production manager for several years. She has been a member of WIFT since almost the beginning and was awarded Unsung Heroine of the NZ Screen Industry in 2007. A member of AFTA since its earliest incarnations, she publicised the NZ Film & TV Awards for several years and has publicised the SPADA conference many times.
