The following organisations are generously offering scholarships to attend Big Screen Symposium 2024. They are for screen practitioners who are finding cost a barrier to attend, which is especially so for those living outside of Auckland. If you are interested in applying, check out these options. 

All applicants must be available and able to commit to attend the Big Screen Symposium on 5-6 April 2024. 

BSS Dates: Friday 5th and Saturday 6th April 2024

NZFC AND INDUSTRY ORGANISATION SCHOLARSHIPS

New Zealand Film Commission – ten scholarships towards a ticket to Big Screen Symposium 2024.

Each of these organisations has 5 scholarships for their members, each offering a ticket to Big Screen Symposium 2024.  

In return for the scholarship, successful applicants will be required to write a one page report reflecting on their learnings and what they got out of attending the event. 

Applicants must be a member of the organisation (Ngā Aho Whakaari, PASC, PISA, WIFT) they are applying to.

The tickets will be purchased on behalf of the successful applicants, and they will be sent a registration form to claim their BSS ticket.

REGIONAL FILM OFFICES SCHOLARSHIPS

Waikato Screen NZ

Two regional scholarships include a ticket to the event and $100 towards the cost of travel. 

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Applicants must be based in Waikato Region 
  • Applicants must primarily work in the screen industry or be actively working towards a career in the screen industry 
  • Be registered in our Crew Directory & across our social media following
  • Applicants must be available and able to commit to attending the Big Screen Symposium on 5-6 April 2024

In return for the scholarship, successful applicants will be required to write a one-page report reflecting on their learnings and what they got from attending the event so that we can share it on Social Media and our newsletter.

Film Bay of Plenty 

Two regional scholarships, each offering a ticket to Big Screen Symposium 2024. 

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Applicants must be based in the Bay of Plenty Region 
  • Applicants must primarily work in the screen industry, or be actively working towards a career in the screen industry 
  • Applicants must be available and able to commit to attend the Big Screen Symposium on 5-6 April 2024.

  • A personal statement explaining why you want to attend the event, how it will contribute to your career development and how your attendance will feedback & benefit the Bay of Plenty Screen industry.

Film Whanganui  

One regional scholarship which includes a ticket to the event and $500 bursary towards cost of travel and accommodation. 

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Applicants must be based in the Whanganui Region 
  • Applicants must primarily work in the screen industry, or be actively working towards a career in the screen industry 
  • Applicants must be available and able to commit to attend the symposium on 5-6 April 2024

Screen Wellington 

Five scholarships with each recipient receiving $500 reimbursement for their BSS ticket ($270) and flights. 

Eligibility criteria: 

Screen Wellington is looking to support five young people in the Wellington screen sector to attend BSS 2024 who may not normally be able to afford the cost. 

  • Applicants must be based in the Wellington region 
  • Applicants must primarily work in the screen industry or be actively working towards a career in the screen industry. 
  • Applicants must be available and able to commit to attend the Big Screen Symposium on 5-6 April 2024.

  • In 300 words or less, why you want to attend BSS and what it will mean for your career. 

Please note reimbursement of costs will be paid four weeks after valid invoice (and receipts) have been received by Screen Wellington.

Screen CanterburyNZ 

Two regional scholarships which include a ticket to the event and $300 bursary towards the cost of travel and accommodation.  

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Applicants must be based in the Canterbury  
  • Applicants must primarily work in the screen industry or be actively working towards a career in the screen industry. 
  • Applicants must be available and able to commit to attend the Big Screen Symposium on 5-6 April 2024. 
  • Applicants who have attended the BSS on a Scholarship bursary in the last 2 years are not eligible this year.

Film Otago Southland 

Two regional scholarships which include a ticket to the event and $500 bursary towards the cost of travel and accommodation. 

Eligibility criteria: 

  • Applicants must be based in Otago Southland Region 
  • Applicants must primarily work in the screen industry, or be actively working towards a career in the screen industry 
  • Applicants must be available and able to commit to attend the Big Screen Symposium on 5-6 April 2024

All applicants that are deemed to be eligible and have sufficiently supplied the application details will be put into a lottery. The selected participant will be drawn from the lottery at random. The selected participant will be required to sign an agreement committing to attend the conference and to use the travel bursary towards conference travel and accommodation costs. Film Otago Southland will purchase the event ticket on behalf of the successful applicants, and they will be sent a link to claim their ticket. Travel and accommodation arrangements will be up to applicant to organise. Film Otago Southland will reimburse $500 of the costs upon production of receipts.
