The theme for the Big Screen Symposium 2020 is Transforming Culture.  It is about the transformative power of story, and the transformation of the screen industry through technological advances.

Culture informs our stories, they are made up of the meanings and emotions we connect to them.  Rapid change in technology transforms our methods, formats, and ability to connect with audiences, and requires adaptability and versatility to harness the possibilities.

Technology allowed us to adapt and move forward during the pandemic, keeping us connected, informed, educated and entertained.

Technology will also allow Academy Award winning Sebastián Lelio to deliver his masterclass from Santiago to the Big Screen Symposium Auckland based audience.

Lelio’s feature films Gloria, Disobedience, A Fantastic Woman and Gloria Bell (starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro) have all received critical acclaim, with A Fantastic Woman winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2017.

More speakers will be announced as we lead up to the event.  Local filmmakers will be well represented alongside our international guests.

The Big Screen Symposium takes place 9 – 10 October 2020 in Auckland at the ASB Waterfront Theatre and is presented by Script to Screen and janda productions.
