This year’s theme explores Creative Power | Mana Auaha. Making screen content is an act of empowerment – a team of storytellers come together to bring a concept to life. There is power in discovering the voices you want to work with and finding stories you want to tell together. Mana comes when you know it is your story to tell.

The collective nature of screen means that there are many decision-makers, ideas and applications of mana on the creative journey. Power shifts through the process of making a film or series and must be taken and let go, for the good of the work. Creative power can be accepting your limitations and trusting others to take charge, or helping shape and grow someone else’s vision. Knowing when to claim space or give space when collaborating is powerful.

BSS2022 explores the many ways we can lift up and empower each other to make resonant and distinctive work that speaks to its audience.

Big Screen Symposium will be held Sat 9 and Sun 10 July 2022 at the ASB Waterfront Theatre – 138 Halsey Street, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland.
